Default 700r4 Governor adjustments.

Just wanted to post this for others who may search in the future.

My 700R4 came out of a LT1 powered Buick Road master. It was a late model with good internals and the 10 vane pump ect ect ect ,, BUT it did have shift issues especially at WOT where it would shift way to early (4200rpm) and if you held her back manually to 5800rpm it had a lazy 1-2 .

http://www.dragracingonline.com/tech...vi_9-bm-3.html

That not only got me through the repair but it totally made my trans 110% better all the way around. I now shift WOT 5800rpm 1-2 and it chirps the tires and my 2-3 is at a healthy 5500rpm .

It holds each gear better even in normal driving and the TV setting allowed for a lot better fine tune. It is a totally different trans !! And all it took me was 30 minutes and $53.00 for the kit.

For a Buick Roadmaster, 4200 is probably the specified WOT shift point. That engine is set up for low RPM-high torque operation; those owners don't want to "wind it out".

Neat read. Hoping mine comes back from the trans shop with the right shift points and I don't need this :-)

Remember the Road Master had the corvette drive train in them and for station wagons they had some pep to there step. The difference is weight and gear ratios , my car being a lot lighter and having steep gears kicked the WOT weights out earlier where if it was still in the station wagon those same weights may have gave it a 5500 wot 1-2 shift.

Usually any car from a kia to a corvette is set up so it will automatically run the motor to a max safe rpm. It is when we take a trans from a different model car that we will face dealing with governor adjustments like I had to do.
