Took the car into the garage this afternoon to investigate a rear end "clunk" sound.
Before the mechanic comes back with his 'diagnosis', I was wondering if I could get a couple of quick responses and see if he says the same or diff stuff from folks on here. (Understand he has the benefit of putting his hands/eyes on the car...)
Car had rear driver side yoke and bushings replaced in 2011. New brakes/rotors in April. Has been on jacks stands for a few months.
The 'clunk' occurs AFTER travelling high speeds (80 kph/55 mph+) and then slowing to about 50 kph/35 mph). After the car sits for a while, the clunk is no longer heard at slow speeds.
It may be that the clunk appears after distance driven and not speed (this hasnt been tested yet).
Sound appears to be coming from rear passenger side.
My clunk was happening when stepping on the gas pedal, 1 clunk and thats it. Thought it could have been the ujoint or diff or the diff mounting bushing, ended up being that the diff mounting bracket was loose on the diff (the 2 bolts that connect it to the diff)
My car had a clunk when putting it in gear (when auto) and shortly after engaging the clutch (manual). I replaced the diff fluid (after rebuilding the diff) and also the lower front mount bushing.
All kidding aside, if that bushing is original it is likely chewed up and can cause a clunk.
My diff got rebuilt due to significant side yoke movement. I asked the rebuilder to save the old gear oil so I could re-use it but I don't think he took me seriously.
