Im trying to decide on whether to go side pipes or duals. I like both for different reasons.

My 81 has the stock crossmember and I think its bolted in. I think the 80-82 used a deeper floor pan on the drivers side so this could be an issue. Do full headers clear the floor pan?

So, what are you guys running ( header make and type ) and how did you install? Ive seen crossmembers with half circles cut out and welded....

Any pics?
TIA!

I'm going with Corvette Central's exhaust. 2.5" but with shorty headers. Wraps around to run along the stock exhaust path under the passenger. I just received everything this week and my engine isn't back in the car yet...so no pics, but a lot of people here have gone with this system so I'm sure finding pics would be easy.

Just googled it....looks like a nice setup. Would be good to see it installed.

I went with the Hooker Competition headers and the matching Hooker exhaust system. It fits great but the Hooker Turbo mufflers are a little quiet for most people. No drone though even at a 2800-3000 rpm cruise speed. Sorry I don't have pics and I'm out of town away from the car.

I purchased ceramic coated headers lightly used from a forum member back in 2000. I think they are Dynomax headers...but not 100% sure. I took car to local muffler shop and had them fab 2.5" exhaust system from headers back and reused by mufflers.

Any pics? Im interested to see how the duals run at the crossmember.

I've got the CA true duals on my '81, full length headers, the pipes cross under the car and both run under the passanger seat area then spread back out after they go past the rear end.

Corvette America? I had a quick look on their site but couldn't find the duals for an 81.
I am on my cell so might have missed it

I've got the CC dual exhaust also. It fit great in stock configuration, but once I went with long tube headers and then moved my trans mount back for the Richmond 5 speed, It doesn't fit so well anymore, even after having the exhaust shop modify it. since the system dosen't even come with mandrel bends, You'd be better off just getting a custom system done at your local exhaust shop

Hooker headers/side pipes. Do it yourself install so you save money.

Jotto, I have full length headers and 3 inch true duals with H pipe. I did not follow the OEM path of 2 into 1 congestion under the passenger side. I had the cross member arched/welded under the driver side to allow the driver side pipe to pass.
My car is lowered to about 1 inch of gap between the tire and fender lip on front and back. The exhaust is low, but so far no scrapes, unless I enter up a steep driveway entrance. So you can do it. Just takes some time and planning and a good exhaust shop.
Others forum members I know have done similar set ups.
Lots of folks having issues with fitament for the new hooker side pipes.

Sorry, Meant Corvette Central-----------

the system comes set up for either manifolds or shorty headers but all I did was cut the pipes so I could hook them up to the header collectors, wasn't hard, just took a bit of measuring.
