Default rag joint ?

Does the steering column need to come out when replacing the rag joint? There wasn't enough space to get the old one outta there so I'm going to guess yes.

it's a 73 454 no power steering car.

Thanks!

I had the same problem and decided to loosen the steering box to get the required clearance.

The steering column needs to be unfastened and pulled back into the driver compartment a couple inches. Or the gear box needs to have two of the three mounting bolts removed, the third bolt loosened and the gear box tipped to provide just a bit more room to slip the flexible coupling out.

I prefer pulling the column back myself. And for whatever it is worth. CHECK the position of the notch in the original rag-joint to the new one. Often times the notch is NOT correct on the new ones and if you install it...it will cause your steering wheel to not be correctly positioned when completed. That is if you are installing a completely assembled rag-joint versus just the rubber ring service kit.
