Ok, while sorting out things I need to complete my EFI conversion, I came to the conclusion that the electric fuel pump I had bought is no good for the purpose of filling up the surge tank that feeds the high pressure pump. It simply makes to much noise being run on continous basis.
I was thinking about keeping my factory pump, however : I run a billet cam and therefor a brass tipped pushrod to drive the pump. I didn't care much about it, as I planned on removing it once I went to the electric pump, but now I'm wondering again about the wear on the brass tip and it getting mushroomed.
Is the mushrooming something which is typical of the race type pumps or does it come with all pumps ?
Anyone ever try those rollerized push rods to help the problem ?
Im not sure about the wear, ive not ran the brass tip, but youd think that if the brass wears enough that its not in constant contact with the cam lobe the the impact might flare the ends out some. Id atleast replace it. I used the roller tip fuel pump push rod from comp. I've only got about 1500 miles on it. So i cant testify to how long it will last, but i think motorhead put a lot of miles on his with no issues.
I have a roller cam and I use a lightweight Moroso fuel pump with hardened ends. (Recommended at the time by the engine builder). 3 years so far, no problems.
I used a Comp roller fuel pump push rod for several years with no issues until I switched to EFI. I also have a brand new one that I bought for another project that I never used, I will sell it to you for $50 + shipping, that is less than 1/2 price. Let me know.
I am also wondering why you are going to the bother and trouble of using a surge tank? I have the FAST EZ-EFI, and I used the Rock Valley in-tank fuel pump system, and it works wonderfully.
