'71 Bad Coil?!

Default '71 Bad Coil?!
Had my '71 out a few times already this year. After it sat for 2 weeks, it hopped in and it just cranked; no start. I got it flooded (oops!). I decided to change the plugs. They were pretty fouled (big surprise). STILL no start; not even a pop. Had no spark; changed the coil (had an old one). BINGO! How often / why do coils fail?

1. Wrong coil installed.
2. Resistor wire has been removed and coil does not have anything to limit current.
3. It got old.

P.S. A coil fails instantly...no prior notice given.
