Need more info......is the sound from the front or back of the car? Is it coming from the right or left? Going over bumps or just turning the steering wheel sitting still????? I had a clanking sound coming from the right front of my car going over bumps and it turned out to be a rotted out upper control arm bushing. I am in the process of doing a front end rebuild.
Please more info and maybe the Forum will help your diagnose your problem.
Good luck
John
Thanks for the compliment. The sound is definitely steering related. It happens when I turn the steering wheel to the left and sometimes occurs when I turn it to the right although not as frequently as the left. The sound is coming from the front and I do feel the clank vibration in the steering wheel.
check the frame around the steering box. i had a simular sound...turned out it was my frame that was broken....5 pieces!!! check it. the steering box area!!!
I know the sound, it can be the steering gear. If someone rebuilt it or messed with the worm gear plug the forward most wormgear bearing may have collapsed or became unseated from the race resulting in a clacking noise
Also check the bolts that secure the steering gear to the frame and the rag joint
Thanks for the thoughts guys. My car is at my friends shop getting some stuff done to it, so I asked him to take a look for any of the suggested ideas while he was at it.
