Default HEI Installation Timing

I am putting my BB back together after its winter refurb. Is there any way to detect the trigger point of the HEI distributor so I can set the initial timing close to where I want it? On a points distributor, I just use an ohmmeter across the points with the crank set at the proper advance.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Just align the metal "contact" pointer for #1 cylinder when the #1 piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. That should put you within a degree or two of final position. If you need better than that, you should have used a degree wheel to check the engine's rotational position to the timing markers.

What I want is 15 * BTC static timing. Is there a detectable signal equivalent to the points opening?

There is. But unfortunately the reluctor wheel and pickup have to move apart rather quickly to generate a signal. I did this exercise when I swapped my original TI distributor for an MSD with the mag pickup. I was looking for total output to see if the MSD would trigger the original TI amp. You might be able to get a reading if your meter is accurate enough. Basically, when the reluctor and pickup are aligned, it's the same as the points being closed. When they move apart, the field collapses and triggers the module.
