I recently had my tranny rebuilt when I replaced my engine. The engine pulls strong, but I cannot get the full potential out of it because the transmission shifts way too early. If I go to WOT on the highway it will shift into passing gear, but will only stay there for about a second. I know there is an adjustment to lengthen or shorten the shifts, but I'm not really sure how to do it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
BTW- Please keep in mind that you are talking to a transmission idiot. Feel free to use terms like: big-round-thingie, or perhaps, pokey-stick thing. I won't be insulted. I promise. :jester
you can adjust by the vacume modulator if it is an adjustable one. it is where your vacume hose connects to the tranny. pull the hose and inside the hole use a i think allen wrench or small scewdriver to adjust in or out. i would say counterclockwise 1 turn then try. play with it and see if that will do it. or you can adjust the dashpot with diffrent springs. this should get someone responding for you good luck it has been a while sence i have done one. :smash:
I put an adjustable modulator on mine and like it a lot. It was a very nice addition to the shift kit.
I got mine from the local auto parts store for around $12.
I thought there was a way to adjust the shift points some other way on the TH350, but I can't remember the thread. You may want to do a search on TH350 or "auto trans" and see if it's still archived.
The modulator only affects shifts for primarily part throttle type operation. It senses the engine load via engine vacuum and puts you in the right gear for that load vs. speed.
The thingy-ma-bob that probably needs adjusting is the governor. Drives61 once had a technical article written about how to do this. If I were you, I'd let a tranny shop do the governor adjustment. The governor's centrifugal weights need to be changed to fling open later (I believe) to hold the passing gear longer.
The other thing that can be the problem is the kick-down cable that runs from the tranny to the carburetor. It needs to be hooked-up and properly adjusted, before you can get passing gear by just WOT'ing.
