Hello all, I just recently purchased a 1980 C3. This is my first Corvette, but definitely not my first old Chevy.
I have an issue with the power steering pump getting hot and the power steering not working easily, it's like a manual steering set up. I did a search and did not find anything that specifically addresses this problem. My question is what should I look at first? Could it be the control valve or the pump? Or something else? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Jim Shea is the foremost expert on PS on our cars. You can find his papers by searching his name. I would be looking at fluid level (I am thinking you have done so already), kinked/crimped hoses and binding linkage. Raise the front tires off the ground with the engine off and see how easily it turns. In the back of the pump there is a flow control valve that may be the problem or the pump itself or the cylinder. Good luck with it. mike...
Thank you for the info. This failure caught me by surprise. I am thinking collapsed hose on cylinder(pressure and return hoses are new)maybe I did not route hoses correctly. I will check out Jum Shea info to gain some knowledge
