I am looking at re-curving my distributor and setting my vacuum advance alittle better. I have two cars Im wanting to do this to one with HEI, the other with just electronic ignition (Im guessing thats the correct name for it, its not HEI and its not points so I call that electronic, but if thats incorrect please correct me). The kits come with a few sets of springs and some have bushings that are plastic and some metal of some type, probably aluminum im guessing, are the hei style kit springs the same and non hei kits? I would like to buy a large spring kit to be able to dial it in where i want it but all i can find are little kits. So I was thinking of buying a couple hei kits and a couple non hei kits, different brands, so this way I would have bushings for both and Im assuming the springs from all the kits would work on either. What Im understanding it the hei distributors have plastic bushings and non HEI have aluminum or metal?
When I did my HEI,I used the Crane Cams kit.Don't remember any bushings.Just springs and the adjustable vacuum can with lockout cam. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/crn-99600-1/overview/
Study the sticky on Ignition Timing..You'll need to limit your vacuum advance or it'll surge at cruise rpm.You can also switch to full manifold vacuum, instead of ported for better idle and cooler temps.Do your research, understand what your doing ask questions.Engines will respond differently depending on the setup.Email Lars for his timing paper. Make sure your dist is in good working order.Weights not sticky and shaft isn't sloppy.Fun and interesting project!!
Get Lars paper. It is above in the "Other" Section, under Tech Tips for C3s. "How to set your timing for peak performance." Easy to do on a Saturday morning and you will be amazed how much better it runs.
Good luck.
Rather than use an adjustable vacuum can, use the correct spec one. Lars has a list of cans, with their specifications, available. Pick the one that fits your needs.
