Default 1978 Steering Column break down

Hello,

I recently acquired a 78 Corvette. The column lock was broken so I decided to replace it. I broke down the column; all the way to the lock. I manged to get it together, and everything works except the horn. I would image it has something to do with step before or after the hub install, but I am not sure. I can't seem to find a step by step online of how to break down the column. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

I have had a problem with the horn on my 1977 and have parts on order. Mine was broken and caused a battery drain even though I disconnected the horns. Strange it happened but my battery drain went away after removing the horn assembly.

If the horn is not working it is not making contact with the electrical contact points. if the horn is not properly installed with the spacers and parts it may not be making contact. I think the horn may not have been properly installed again since there are spacers, a spring and contact points on the horn. Yours is the same as my 1977 and the newer parts are about $35.00 bucks then better made.

Disassemble it again and see if that helps if not here is a replacement part.

I am not sure where Eckler's got their information. The hardware shown should fit 1969 thru 1975 and 1977 thru 1982 Corvettes with tilt & telescoping columns. The upper horn contact is GM #3949103 for all of these listed years.

The upper horn contact is different for 1976. GM #9753517 I am not sure as to what difference. The 1976 AIM started with the same upper horn contact as the 1969-1982 T&T columns but a new contact was released before start of production. Also the 1976 steering wheel and hub does not require the horn contact stand shown in the above pic.
