So went out and started rewiring the fans and fuel pump, previous owner had them wired to HEI dist. So I thought about running fans from alternator. Got meter and found the alternator has 12 volts with key off. Is this correct? Also 12 volts with key on. I'm going to run a wire from fuse box to a terminal block and then run wire to circuit breaker and relay for both fans and electric fuel pump. Will this work?

Yes the stud on the alt is always hot. That's why it's covered with a boot. The relay should have a constant power wire and a 12volt key wire. If you're not running a relay, you're looking for a problem or a fire down the road...

12volt key/ign. Is most likely the wire you pulled off the distributor. I can't see running fans of the distributor without having a misfire when those fans kick on.
