Default Flat Black Paint on Bumpers

Whoever painted the car for the PO they painted over the bumper pads on the front and rear bumpers (I am pretty sure it was a lazy painter that didn't want to tape them off).

I was planning on taping them off, sanding them down and using a rattle can of flat black to fix them. I was wondering what is the best kind of flat black to get?

Or in 75 were they supposed to be the same color as the car and not black?

You don't want "flat" black paint on those bumper pads. You want semi-gloss black paint on them. At least, that's how they came from the factory. [Heck, I didn't like them at all when they introduced them.]

The factory paint job wasn't all that great, either. Mask off and tape around them after cleaning well with lacquer thinner (being careful to not wipe on areas you don't want painted). Should be an easy job.

Thanks for the tip, any suggestions on brand of semi-gloss?

I will be sure to tape them off real well, I will paper up everything else when I get ready for paint, over spray is never a good thing.

Bumperettes were black, front and rear.

Trim black is the same as semi-flat or satin black. That is what all the 'black-out' paint in wheelwells, interior trim and engine compartment surfaces are. The bumperettes should be semi-gloss black...same as the accessory items under the hood.

Any good brand of semi-gloss black will work. Krylon, Dupli-Color, etc. Heck, even Rustoleum semi-gloss black will get that job done.

Good to know, I was going to re-spray the center of the rims as well.

I looked closer at the bumper pads last night, the paint on them is not bad at all (no dings or chips), I am thinking I can just scuff them up good, clean and spray them, I don't need to strip them down to the glass.

I used Dupli-Color Trim Paint on mine, looks good and has been somewhat durable. You should be able to find it at any parts store.
