I have a 78 with a 350... I got a small oil leak appears to be in the back end. Very little leakage over the summer maybe 3/4 litre for 3000 km.
The mechanic ran the car for 2 rounds of 20 minutes bouts on the ramp at 2000 rpm, no leak evident. (inspection cover was off)
Again We ran it for 20 minutes at 2500 rpm on the ramp after an hour on the highway with the inspection cover off. It appeared to be a small drop of oil on the back end. We did notice when we put it up on the ramp there appeared to be a small drop of oil on the pressure switch. The switch was replaced 5 years ago and was put in with high temp sealant. (This was my first attempt at solving the leak)
Had the oil pan gasket changed and rear seal... still leaking... oil shows up in the inspection cover and along the undercarriage. This is the second time for the oil pan gasket and rear seal replacement (Done just before I bought the car 5 years ago) This time even used some additional sealant for the pan to help seal it.
I once had a similar leak on a 283 in a Chevelle, turned out to be coming from under the back of the intake and running down. Back then they used a flat cork gasket there, probably silicone or such now. Since the hood opens from the back you probably can see that easily, on the Chevelle it was back there in the dark.
Or maybe there is a oil galley plug in the rear of the engine near the camshaft that is leaking out in front of the flexplate/flywheel where you can't see it.
when you say 'rear seal' , are you meaning rear pan seal ,or rear main crankshaft seal, same area, two different seals. lost of folks do the first when its the 2nd thats the issue
