Re: Automatic To 4-Speed Standard Conversion... (subboz)
Yeah, but is there a kit with all the parts, I know Ecklers has a lot of the clutch linkage parts. So perhaps one could just buy a new complete clutch linkage
Re: Automatic To 4-Speed Standard Conversion... (chigung)
My 75 was already converted when I bought it. The modifications will be extensive. I don't know of any kits, but you should look around for them. You will need to remove the gas/brake pedal idler bar and replace it with one that includes the clutch pedal. You will need to tap the hole in the block where the clutch rod pivot shaft bolts in. You will need to measure your crank shaft rear hole to see if there is a pilot bearing that will fit it, or you will need to remove your crank shaft to get it drilled out, or replace it with a shaft that has the proper size pilot bearing hole. You will also need to replace your center console with a stick shift console (automatics only allow movement forward and back, and will bind with a stick that requires lateral movement as well. You will need to weld on a bracket for the rear tranny mount and shift lever assembly. That should be all the mods, next you need to buy the clutch pedal and linkage rods, bell housing, pilot bearing, throw out bearing, clutch, clutch lever, pressure plate, flywheel, transmission, and possibly the correct output shaft yoke.
My estimate for shop labor and parts will be around $3,000. If you do the work yourself and buy used parts then perhaps you can sneak by with around $1,500 (used muncie is around $700 alone).
Re: Automatic To 4-Speed Standard Conversion... (Rockn-Roll)
This is easier than most of us think.
Tge guy that did it on my vette told me how he did it, he used a hydraulic system from summit (it comes with pedal, bracket, master and slave cyl)
Now it's easiet to go with hyd than to get the orignal Z bar to work along with who knows how many rods, etc.
What you need to do is cut the brack pedal in half in order to fit the clutch one, then you mout the bracket onto the firewall (I think) well you'll figure that out.
Depending on trans you may need to chang the fork and the mounting location for the slave cyl. Well that's custom work so you do your best. You could go with a hyd through out bearing. (much better to install and better op) but they get expensive sometimes.
Well if you have more questions IM me and I'll see how's on mine so that you can do it on yours.
Oh BTW your cross member may need to be cut or moved.

Re: Automatic To 4-Speed Standard Conversion... (chigung)
I did this swap 2 years ago in a 75. The absolute hardest part was removing and installing the new pedals. I went with a hydraulic clutch and slave cylinder. I bought everything for a 85 one ton truck. You could go with the smaller bellhousing from a camaro. The master cylinder for the 85 one ton bolted perfectly to my firewall, the holes were already there. The slave cylinder which is bolted to the bellhousing only needs a short brake line to complete the connection. I added and extension to the front of the transmission cross member and shortened the drive shaft. I first went with a T5 to see if I would like it then upgraded to a Tremec.
Once again the pedal swap is the hardest part.
Re: Automatic To 4-Speed Standard Conversion... (inferno-vette)
If you are going to go through all that trouble I would look at a 5 or 6 speed tranny. Why not get the o/d to get the rpm's down and the top speed up? Just a thought.
