Default Differences between the L82 engine left and right valve covers

Hi Guys,

I would like to clarify a doubt with you. Does anyone can tell me if there are differences between the valve covers on the left and right side? Is it possible to remove the circle emblem and replace it with the oil fill cap? Looking at a photo of the inside of two valve caps they seem to be equal, and there in the right side cover fitting for the oil fill cap. My idea is to use the right valve cover on the left side with the oil fill cap. Is it possible?

Yes it is, or that emblem would come off quick from PCV gases warming the bottom of it.

OP - why do you want to do this? Did you buy two right side valve covers?

The right cover is solid under the emblem, but could possibly be opened up, to accept an oil cap. The left and right LT-1/L-82 valve covers, are "basically" the same casting. The only difference is the the left side cover, has the opening for the oil cap, while the right cover is solid in this area, and gets covered by the emblem.

I'm not really sure I understand what your trying to do. The left cover already takes the oil cap, that is unless you have two right side covers, and want to convert one to use on the left.

Thanks for all the replies.

The reason I'm wanting to put the right side cover on the on the left side is because there is a small crack in the original cover and a friend offered to give me a right side cover that does not have the opening for the oil fill cap. As I saw a photo of the two inner lids I thought it could be done.

I would like to include that photo, but I don't know how to do that.

In the same spot as before, I'd imagine.

If you look under the aluminum L82 valve cover on the emblem side, you will see an exact image as the cap fill side with one exception; it has the center filled closed. It appears to me you would have two options to convert it over to an oil fill opening. You can open it to accept the original twist fill cap, as the two cap cam lock studs are already cast in. You can also drill the opening to a correct size to accept a rubber plug used on other model GM cars. Either way, the aluminum valve cover can be made to serve your need. If you are not getting a bargain price, these covers are always available at swap meets, ebay and craigslist and with the fill cap already made by the factory. Years ago I had two covers with fill caps, so filled one with aluminum, sanded flat and glued an emblem in the space. Only a very well trained eye could tell what I had done.

I would offer one of my spares but since I don't know your location it may be a long drive for you to come pick it up

Thanks to everyone who answered me, especially those who gave me ideas of how to adapt the cover. I had seen a picture inside the cover and I thought they were identical but was not sure that was a fill aluminum. In this case I find it difficult to make the hole in tht place. I searched the internet and found the original covers used and other new but not original. As the price is close, I do not know wich one is better, as maybe the new one is not identical the original and in the other hand, the used maybe have some sort of warping or cracking.

For those who asked my location I am in Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, but my car is in Arlington, Texas. I've been there in June and will return in August when I shall go also to Carlisle (Corvette Show). I'm restoring a car in my country. I'm specialize in older vehicles like the Toyota FJ40. This Corvette will be my first car ride.
