HELPPPPP!!! im am wore out. was doing the rear brakes on my 68 327 turbo 400.car.and wile tighting a bolt on the rear axcel wile in park and on jack stands. something gave. the rear axcel stared turning. oh crap was my responce. so i got in the car and fired it up wile it was still on stands. no tires on the rear. it started in park but made an loud, no a LOUD!! grinding sound. i put it in all the other gears. no grinding sound. so today i droped the trans pan and took a look at the pawl and the gear it locks into they do not look bad. pawl looks realy good, yet wile on stands and me pushing up on the pawl to make sure it holds gear inplace. i can still roll the tires with my foot. and thoughts. sencerly tired, deflated and plum wore out.
I hate to point out the obvious but, How can you see the parking pawl from a pan removal? I only see a valve body when I remove the pan. That being said. You should not run your car on jack stands as the U-joints are hyper extended, that does them no good. You may not have had the pawl set in its home or you have one bad slot in the hub that captures the pawl. That is about all I can say but, don't worry, put it together and see what develops going forward.
Any metal in the trans pan? Follow the rod that runs down the left side of the trans and make sure the 2 bolts that hold the guide for the parking pawl are tight. With a light, you can look and see if the pawl is engaging the ring on the rear planetary that locks it into park. It's right above (looking up from the bottom) the guide plate.
Also ponyup, it would be a good idea to list where you live (town/ state) in your profile. Many guys, myself included will alway lend a hand and there's always someone on here near by
