Default Rear-End Carrier

My mechanic says I have a fracture in the carrier inside the differential. He was trying to find a new one for my 3 series, but the part is discontinued from GM. Zip and Corvette Central do not sell just the carrier. Anyone know where else I can look for this part. I do not wan't a rebuilt diff. since it is number matching. Thanks....

----Andy

Try http://www.tomsdifferentials.com for internal differential parts. Also, Eaton makes new posi cases as well (I think that's what you're referring to.

Tom is out of new units for another month. I found this on Jegs site for Eaton which is what is in my vette now.

http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...42&prmenbr=361

I am looking at part number 362-19554-010 for a 3.70 setup. Does this look like it will fit?

Jegs also lists a Auburn Gear Pro series in the catalog for corvette's 63-79 but it is only a 10 bolt. My mechanic said 12 bolt, but I need to verify. Anyone have comments on Auburn Gear assuming they have the correct part or should I just stick with the Eaton?

The Vettes do not use a 12 bolt carrier. You need a 10 bolt Vette carrier for your car. I have heard the Auburn units are a little weak but I have no experience with them so I cannot verify this. There are plenty of good used 3 series carriers out there. You might want to call Contemporary Corvettes In Bristol Pa. He has a lot of used parts for sale. 1 800 367 8388. Just looked at the website you posted. That is definitly not the correct one for your car. You need a Vette specific rear.
The pro series 10 bolt Corvette Part # 109-542062 Will fit your car

I will have to verify what he took out. I asked and he said 12. Is it possible for someone to install a 12 for a 10 bolt? I have called 4 different places and they either don't sell just the posi carriers or they are out of stock.

I am assuming the Eaton GM 10 bolt on the Jegs website is not for a vette either?

Worst case I'll call Contemporary, but I am trying to find a new unit, not a used.

The Corvette rear is a 10 bolt rear. The Auburn that you were looking at would not fit either. There is a 12 bolt rear that Toms sells for a lot of $$$. This is a bullet proof rear. I doubt that it was installed in your car. They never left the factory with these. There is nothing wrong with a good used 3 series carrier. You can purchase just the carrier and switch all your good components over to the carrier. When they are rebuilt this is not usually a part that is replaced. Only when it is cracked or the pin hole is oblonged. Toms has a fix for this also. He bores out the pin hole and installs a larger pin. This is stronger and takes more abuse.

Gordon,

Why wont the Auburn fit? It is listed for a 63-79 corvette up to a 3.70 ratio?

--Andy

P.S. I spoke with Tom and he cannot deliver me a setup since he is out of stock for another month. Also my current setup cannot be fixed since the fracture is from the opening where the posi clutches are servicable all the way to the end where the yoke inputs to the carrier.

That Auburn carrier will fit. I thought you were talking about the one that was listed for a regular Chevy housing. I would take up on redvetracr offer. If the carrier is in good shape you should have no problems. I have not heard great things about the Auburn units. Just an observetion no personal experience.

I spoke with Tom about the Auburn units. He does sell them new. He said they are only for street use and should be fine since my car is only mild street use. They are not for strip use. I am going to check with my mechanic on his opinion of using a used carrier or if he has had experience with the Auburn Pro series carrier. Thanks for the info guys.....
