Re: backspacing question (70 LS1)
What is the max backspacing you can run with the stock trailing arms with the parking brake bracket removed? Is it 4.5 or 5 or more?
That would depend on what diameter wheel you're using. 15's--No way, 16's NO. You'd probably need to go to 17 in to clear the rear spring. That's the problem I had using16x8's. Stock BS is 4.0.
I just went out and measured an old original spare rim for my '72, and the B/S is 3.5 inches, measured from the outer flat rim section to the flat of wheel flange surface....less than I had guessed, well anyway, add 3/4 inch to that makes it 4.25 inches max wheel width on a stock T arm with ebrake moved....keeping same wheel centerline....it worked out for me at 2.5 inches thick wheel adaptors with stock 17" '92 vette wheels...the 275/50/17 tires just clear the arms/sway bar/spring about 3/8 inch.....IF I went the offset arms, I"d have to go even larger in rum diameter on account of spring, but then still faced the sway bar....could be eliminated like stock sharks I suppose, but I have a stiff front bar, and steering is limited for 255 tires in front anyway, so I wanted somewhat of a close size matchup for handling...
It's a compromise, no question....but at least I don't have flares, and they fit inside the wells, looking more or less correct...
I run 5" with offset t-arms...to run 5.5 inch other issue come into play, such as the spring bolt, sway bar and the part of the fram rail near the top of the tire.
I think I could squeeze an 18 x 10 under there with a 5.25" backspacing, at this point the spring end would probably fit inside the wheel. Not sure if it would stick too far out side the quarter panel though...its only .25" more than I have now., plus the 18" tires have less of a "bulge"
