Default 3x2 Carb Issues

I recently acquired a '69 Stingray with a 427 and 3x2 Tri-power. The motor has been rebuilt and the carbs are new Holley replacements. The car sat for about 8 months before I had it shipped to me.

After installing a new battery the car started right up and I drove it down the street for a fresh tank of gas ( tank was almost empty when I got it). On the way back, the motor started to sputter. It died just before getting it into the garage. After repeated attempts to start it, the motor just wouldn't turn over.

I have checked the fuel lines and fuel pumps and I was even able to get the fuel filter out of the front carb. The filter was clean but there was white residue on the filter spring and the fuel filter gasket was in bad shape. I cleaned the parts up and reinstalled.

There is fuel getting into the fuel bowls as when I open the fuel valve on the top of bowl gas will spray out (all 3 carbs).

I am thinking that there is varnish, etc preventing the fuel from entering the carb bodies.

I am thinking that my only recourse is to clean and rebuilt all three.

Any thoughts?

Clarification please. You say the motor won't turn over. You mean the battery is not spinning the engine, or it is turning over and just won't start? It makes quite a bit of difference.

Ralph,

Sorry about that. the motor will turn over but not start.

If I squirt a little gas into the carb body it will attempt to start.

The white deposits on the spring indicate that the fuel in the carbs evaporated due to non-use. Odds are, there are deposits in all of the passages, metering circuits, and bowls. The fuel inlet needle valves could all be stuck shut as the fuel pressure is only around 7psi. If you want peace of mind, freshen up the carbs... the carbs probably need to be freshened up.

I've found on every car I've bought it's best to rebuild the carb. That way you know it's good going forward.
