Default 1978 intermittent alternator charging problem solved

Been fighting intermittent problem where battery runs down. Long story short - shop found the problem for me - the alternator pigtail was bad. I guess 35 years takes its toll on things.

Are you talking about the 2 prong connector at the back of the alternator? If so, that is just a piece of plastic that hold the female connections to the male prongs on the alternator. Are you are sure that the wires weren't just loose or corroded?

Well they charged me $14 for a pigtail (yes 2 prong at the rear) and yes apparently the pigtail wasn't holding the wires tight. I had checked everything (I thought) but stupidly assumed since the alternator was recharging (putting out power) failed to realize the plug was vibrating or something and not maintaining contact. I am not much of a mechanic unfortunately. Took the shop about 15 minutes to find the problem.
