I do business with a mechanic that lets me supply my own parts (saves $). I need a mini high torque starter for a 1978 vette 4 speed. I looked this up and had trouble with questions like how many teeth on flywheel. Can anyone help me?
I would expect you have a 168T flywheel. You can check by looking for offset mounting bolts on the starter. If so, then use a GM starter. I believe PG260 is the basic part number or designator code. Came on a bunch of mid 90's GM trucks and it will bolt-on using the same holes as your original starter did.
Be careful of using an aftermarket starter that says it's for a 168T flywheel but has the bolts in a straight line perpendicular to the starter motor shaft. Your block might not be drilled for the one hole. Dads '78 block wasn't drilled with the 3rd hole to allow a straight across bolt pattern starter to be mounted. I might as well get this recommendation in now before I get the cry babies whining about me criticizing their recommendation of this type of starter without telling you to ensure the threaded holes are in the block like the last time this topic came up.
