I have a '72 A/C 454 I'm restoring and have a question about the lower radiator hose. The car had a formed single piece hose with a support spring when I got it, but I know it's supposed to have the 3-piece hose (two end rubber pieces with a metal center and 4 clamps). I also know it's a byotch to install the single piece hose and I couldn't do it without unbolting the radiator support to have some room to work. So what's up with the 3-piece hose setup? Is it just to make the installation much easier, or is there some other reason behind it?
Hi ncv,
I believe the steel 'tube' had a 'dimple' the side of it and was there to provide clearance from the pointed fan blade tips.
Regards,
Alan
Hey Alan,
Yes, that tube does have a dimple in it, but the blades also cleared the one-piece lower hose that I'm replacing. Makes sense, I guess, but I'm thinking it still has something to do with ease of installation as it's so tight as is. I can install a one-piece lower hose without all that much ado, once you know the tricks involved. You reckon there's anything else besides blade clearance as the reason behind this?
