If you are going to buy a set, buy a set of 6 ton stands. They will cost a little more, but the extra lift height is worth it. I can get my car over 24" off the ground with them. They made a trans re&re so much easier.

I have a set of six ton for the back and a set of three ton for the front. Then I use an extra set of three ton for safety and a set of two ton for extra safety. Four six ton would be a good way to go. The reason for the larger stands is to get the height without having to extend the stands up so far they seem unstable. Stay safe. mike...
Hi G,
I'll agree with Mikes suggestions and points.
I'll only add to be VERY careful under there.
I guess I'm becoming more cautious with age but I now put the wheels/tires under the car in the areas I'm not working.
It only takes a minute and if something goes wrong they might just make it so my wife doesn't have to try to lift the car off me.
Regards,
Alan
And buy decent ones. This isn't the place to find the lowest price.
I actually use 4x 12t stands to get the height while not extending them very far, then a smaller set to support the front (up at the sway bar) and a set of extra tall to support the rear (at the back of the frame)
But I'm excessively paranoid and work alone.

Don't get junk stuff. I only have 6 ton and up stands. I have a pair of 32 ton stand that go to 30 inches. And I'll use three 6ton at the other end.
My worse thought is me bring under the car getting crushed. With my wife walking around the shop with posti notes putting reserves on my stuff.
I got a set of 6 ton stands from Harbor Freight. They will go up to 20+ inches. My jack does 21" so that is perfect. That gives me enough room to get under there with a creeper and move my arms around to work.
Plus, the 6 ton stands have a base that is about 10"x10". Very stable.
