Basically it is a shield that covers the electronic parts in the car to reduce the amount of static electricity generated. It reduces the amount of static in the radio, etc.

Mine was a plastic cover that went over the distributor. I took it off when I replaced my coil with an Accel Super coil. I ended up giving it to an old forum member (Stephanie79) that wanted to have her engine compartment in a more stock form.

This is a plastic ignition shield. It is lined with what looks like aluminum foil and is grounded to the cylinder head by a metal mesh cable.
You can see it to the left in this pic. The metal mesh cable attaches to the wingnut and then to the valve cover bolt.
