Default AC Low Pressure Switch Question?

I had my AC converted to 134a when I bought it 2 years ago.

It worked that Summer and last Summer.

This Summer - no AC.

I had it charged up with dye and it appeared that the compressor was leaking.

I replaced the compressor and now when I run the AC, the compressor clutch comes on for 5-10 seconds, then goes off for 5-10 seconds, and this repeats continuously.

Is this normal operations for the compressor or is the low pressure switch acting flaky and turning the compressor on and off prematurely?

The air coming out is cool, but not what I would call cold.

Any suggestions what else it could be?

Any suggestions for some diagnostics I can perform to nail down the problem?

You may need a little more 134A.

Default a liitle bit

what you describe is typical of a low charge of refridgerant, put the gauges on and check the pressures, if you don't have the tool or the know how, that's ok, let a pro do it, but it sounds like you might still have another leak, or something else going on.

OK... I'll pick some refrigerant up at my local parts shop and give that a try.

Just curious... could it be the switch? What symptoms would a failed low pressure switch present?

I'm thinking of just applying 12v to the clutch myself directly to test if the air gets any colder. That would determine if it's the low pressure switch or not, no?

How long can I safely keep the clutch engaged without damaging something?

If you have gauges, the high pressure should be about 2X ambient temp plus 15-20 and the low should be around 28-30. That is with the A/C on max and a fan blowing on the rad.

if your clutch engages ant the compressor is coming on, your switch is most likely ok, they normally fail in such a way that the compressor won't come on,,common test, jump the switch , compressor comes on, switch bad, assuming that the is enough refridge. make sure you've got enough 134 in it first.
