Hey guys I have a few questions, We bought our car about 3 months ago, and I am taking inventory of all the things we need to fix or address. The first big thing I noticed is when you are driving and it shifts up to third a little bit sooner than I would like, but being a three speed auto, I guess it had no real choice. The problem is that when you are in third at about 30 or 40 and you put your foot down, it doesnt' kick down to 2nd and take off like I feel it should. It has good torque, so it winds it way up pretty good, but no kick down. I was looking at the cable and it is connected to the carb right, when you open it up with your hand you can watch it pick up the rod and yank it forward. So my question is, Is it most likely that I just need to replace that cable to they just go bad? Or is it a problem in the transmission?
Also
I think I badly need to replace or rebuild the carb, it just seems like it needs a good refreshing car had 86k miles on it. I was thinking about sending it off to national carb, they have a deal where for 150 they take it and roll, it in stone and polish it back up rebuild it like new and will put a decent stree/strip tune on it nothing to aggresive but not doggie? Anybody have any thought on this, or dealt with national carbaritor's or have good suggestions?
Try adjusting the cable first. Also...if you have floor mats...remove them. VISUALLY watch the accelerator linkage when you are pressing the accelerator pedal all the way down and see how far it opens. Naturally...the air cleaner is removed. Then...manually do it and see if it stops in the same location. If you can manually rotate the throttle MORE than the pedal can do ( which is why you removed your floor mat due to being an obstruction).
Sometimes when you release the clip and allows your kick down cable to go inwards...and then re-lock it again...and then go in and nail the accelerator pedal to the floor. It will pull the cable out to the adjusted spot it is requiring so you have kick down working. Test drive it and see if it works. Driving normally wait till you feel it shift from first to second...and then nail the gas pedal and see if it kicks down.
IF that did not work ...try this method. While the release catch is being held on the kick down cable...have someone nail the pedal to the floor and hold it. Then press the retainer back in to hold that adjustment. Then test drive as mentioned above.
Hopefully you know to make sure that you have the correct fluid level...in park...on a level surface with the engine idling and it being at operating temp. Over filling is BAD as it being low.
Wow Thanks DUB you the man. I had to watch a quick youtube vid, but I went out and pop up'd the little clip on the top of the piece that connects to the bracket, and the cable snapped back about a half inch and was in the all the way back position. So I took it out for a test drive and let it shift into second and then stuck my foot in it, she kicked down alright and took off like she never had before. That was a fun ride I knew there was some good power hiding in there somewhere those secondary's opened right up and away she went.
