Default 1968 charging issues

Voltage regulator contact not pulling in to tell alternator to start charging. Amp gauge not working either. Can force contact on regulator to connect and alternator starts charging but amp gauge still not registering. Everything under the console pertaining to the heat and air was unplugged would this have any effect on the charging issue. Already changed out the voltage regulator.

Did you unplug the amp gauge accidentally?

No it was connected, and the indicator was laying over at -40. found the fusible link behind the distributor disconnected, Black to orange wire. I think it connects to the larger red wires in the same location. This evening when I cranked it up, it was charging, as soon as the alternator heated up, I started getting erratic voltages and then it quit charging. Amp gauge still didn't work.

found that the ignition switch connector was about to fall off. Pushed plug back on and securely. Fixed the charging problem
