My friend is selling is fully built roller 306 engine. its in a manual so my questions are this
Will it work in an automatic?
What parts would i need?
Also can a 306 be put in a c3 corvette easily?
What parts would I need to make it fit?
Thanks as I know nothing about engine mounts and if engines can be interchangeable from auto to manual
Do you mean a 305? 307? Same exterior dimensions as a 350 so all mounts and transmission will line up. No issue that it is from a car with manual trans as automatic trans mounting does not affect the engine. I think 305/307 are internally balanced like 327 and 350 so the auto trans flex plate for the transmission should be fine.
Well, it depends on what engine it is based on and the bore/stroke ratio. If it is an overbored 302 then it will be peaky without the low end torque that a heavy C3 needs to get moving unless you change the rear end ratio to something lower, like a 3.73 or a 4.11. That sucker will buzz at 60 MPH. You need more details before you pull the trigger on that one. It could easily be a dog around town but a killer engine on the freeway.
Nvm its a 306 ford. Came out of a foxbody mustang and is built to roller. Will it work?
Sure, you can make anything work, if you throw enough money at it. Would it be worth it? Absolutely not. Stick with a small block chevy if you want to minimize expensive headaches and hassles.
If this guy is trying to sell you a Ford Windsor engine to put in your 'vette, he may be having a little fun at your expense.
Someone mentioned the .030 over boref 302. That would be around there. A 4.030 bore and a 3 inch stroke. Came in the Z28. Sound great and rpm very high. However, you'll need to keep it around the 4,500 rpm range to have power. The Zs ran well but all at top end. If you ran an auto you'll need a big number stall converter.
In a C3 it would be a dog from the sit still, unless you really gear it. Like someone said 4.11 or maybe a 4.56.
If you got it cheap enough, it may be fun to play with for a while. As a driver, I think it would get old before to long.
