Hopefully we learn something every day. Here's one for experience. My reciently rebuilt engine used too much oil from the beginning and did not get much better w/break in. Got in to mech who after testing ect, he found the pvc valve was picking up oil being splashed on it because valve covers are unbaffled. Now I need baffled tall valve covers. Because the oil was being mixed w/gas and vaporised to burn well there was very little smoke. I'm actually happy. The engine runs like a swiss watch. The idea of tearing back int it again and the down time had me worried. New valve covers I can handle.
Congrats! Chasing down oil consumption is a PITA. I'm still trying. I switched from tall covers back to standard height, so let me know if you're interested in a a barely used set of Edelbrock signature chrome tall covers.

Mr. Gasket sells valve cover gromets that have baffles built into them. I picked up a pair of the at Advance Auto for $8.99 (I believe) for my Mickey Thompson valve covers. Just something to think about.
Tai, My engine did that REALLY REALLY bad untill it broke in, took about 5000 miles...dunno why, just did....
had me worried for nearly a year....
but now a daze the thing is fine, still sucks up some oil into the PCV valve, and lines into the manifold...but I have stock valve covers with baffles, and an L98 style injection unit, I re routed the PCV line into a new hole I drilled in bottom of plenum so it did not continue to gum up the valve body, made the idle much more stable, quit that constant cleaning job...
but the 'oiling' remains an issue, but the actual 'consumption' has stopped....
I recently had the same trouble with my freshly rebuilt engine. When I started upping the rev range a bit oil also drizzled out of the open breather:cry . I have since changed the **** thin running-in oil I was using, put some nice new Edelbrock Elite (tall) valve covers on and installed the supplied baffles. I've since covered another 900 miles with hardly any oil consumption and no oil from the breather. success, VettePaul.
