hey guys my c3 1979 corvette was running great but was heating up so me and my dad (a mechanic) took the heads of and took it to the machine shop for a valve job and a re surface, anyway after putting it back together exactly the same was it was meaning timing and things the car starts but backfires through the exhaust when its on gear. any idea what it could be, ive changed the lifters and a brand new distributer and still nothing...
When we took it of we made sure that the timing on the pulley was at 0 and the number one cylinder was at top dead center and the Distributor was facing the number one spark plug wire. Before taking it off we marked it and put it back exactly the way it was, so I don't know if the timing might have moved?

I know it seems obvious, but I would recommend to double or triple check your firing order.
I looked at mine three times before I noticed that one of the spark plug wires had be accidentally switched to the incorrect spark plug beside the correct plug.
Switched them back and all has been fine with no backfires.
