I am looking to do mine this winter (I know...too soon to think about winter). Mine is metal so I think I will strip it down. I am nervous about the Chrome areas. I plan on buying a new ashcup, lens, badges and screws. I will try to remember to take before & after pictures and post on the forum when I am finished.

Does anyone suggest a topcoat for protection? Any clear topcoat. Maybe a spray urethane or something to keep it from getting scratched and marked up?

I painted both my lower and upper last winter. Someone started this topic last winter and I thought why not. It was pretty easy to do. I bought the Aircraft paint stripper at Autozone and it did a great job. Also it revealed a chrome center console that I almost put back in the car just because it looks so good. I wound up painting it with Krylon Semiflat Black. It turned out pretty good even if I do say so myself. The only thing I couldn`t do was the heater controls. I couldn`t get the lens out of the controls easy enough and was afraid I would not get it back together correctly. http://itb.inthecrease.com/i/express...frustrated.gif

This is going to sound really dumb after all of these in depth posts, but I did mine with spray in bed liner (for a truck bed) and it looks great and is really durable

Mine is plastic ('77) and I got great results using the following page as a guide:
