Default Diff spring bolt holes

I replaced the diff in my 73 with a diff from a 66 (stamp 66 AO). My 73 diff used a 2-1/4 wide spring with big bolts for the spring mounting plate. I ordered a composite rear spring that came 2-1/4 wide with big bolt holes. Unfortunately my 66 diff has small bolt holes which I though only 78-79 used. And I thought 78-79 used a 2-1/2 wide spring. My new composite spring fits into my 66 case.and I am afraid a 2-1/2 spring will not fit. Would I be ok using the small bolts with the smaller mounting plate even though this spring came with bigger bolt?? It says it fits 63-77

The only thing I would be concerned with is that the spring fits the cover correctly...and the mounting plate fits it correctly also. Meaning I would not want the spring to have the ability to twist or rotate due to a narrow spring was installed in a cover that was made for a 2 1/2" wide spring. The size of the bolts and plate need to match what the cover will allow. If you are concerned that the bolts are smaller in diameter...then getting a new rear end cover with bigger bolts can be done if you choose.

When I look on line to see what size spring fits a 66 diff I find 2-1/4 to be the correct size which is the size of the spring I have now. There is a very small amount of play (side to side and front to back) but it doesn't wobble and lays flush when bolted to the diff. I'm not worried bout bolt size just that my original mounting plate has bigger hole to accommodate the original 73 diff. So when I put the small bolts there's play in the bolt holes of the plate only. Wehen bolt on tightly everything is tight and flush. I'm assuming there should be some play to accomadate the trailing arms. My trailing arms are off the car being rebuilt.

Best practice would be to install a mounting plate with the smaller bolt holes.
