It's July 1, Canada Day. So for Canadians, put the Maple Leaf flag on your antenna and get out and drive your Corvette. Enjoy our national day. And of course, drive safely and save the Molson's for the BBQ afterwards.
I appreciate that greeting from Germany! I lived in British Columbia for three years and indeed it is a beautiful Province. I spent time in England, France, Spain and Holland but have never been to Germany. Hope to get there some day!
Just a little regard from a German who loves your country. Just came back from honeymoon in B.C. and just feel like buying the next ticket...
Thomas
Thomas, your next 2 week trip should start in the Niagara region of Ontario and travel east to Quebec City stopping for a day or more in each of Toronto, Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City. :yesnod:
Did you know.....that before 1982 Canada Day had been known as Dominion Day, First of July, Confederation Day, and July the First? Canada Day celebrates the events that occurred on July 1, 1867, when the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government. The BNA Act proclaimed "one Dominion under the name of Canada," hence the original title of the holiday, "Dominion Day." Dominion Day was officially renamed "Canada Day" by an Act of Parliament on October 27, 1982. This change reflected the policy of successive governments to downplay Canada's colonial origins. Canada's national celebration is always observed on July 1, unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case it is observed the following day.
Maurice,
You are absolutely correct! I am very impressed. Yes, Canada Day was formerly Dominion Day, reflecting historical links to Great Britain. Canada was a British colony until July 1, 1967. We celebrated our 100th birthday by hosting the World's Fair in Montreal 1967. It was called Expo 67 and that is the origin of the name of Montreal's major league baseball team.
And yes, successive governments have tried to downplay the British roots. The red ensign was replaced by the maple leaf flag in 1965. The Royal Mail became Canada Post. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) became part of the Canadian Forces (CF) and on and on.
With any luck this maybe one of the last Canada Days, lets just unite the US and Canada, common currency, you take ours as par, we will luv you forever.
