I just noticed my driver's side window is not as smooth at it used to be. A bit jerky accompanied by a "rattling" noise. Something is worn or is coming loose. I lubricated the moving parts this spring so that is not the problem.
Eckler's has some nice pictures of the innards. It seems that the regulator gear is prone to failure. They have an SS repair gear kit for $45.00 or a complete steel gear for $28.00. I would appreciate hearing from members as to whether my preliminary diagnosis seems close to the truth and if so, how difficult is it to get that gear installed. Many thanks.
If it was the gear, there would be dead spots where you would have to move the glass by hand until you hit another tooth. More likely if you graesed everything real good then it is probably the motor itself. I had the exact same problem, so I talk from experience. I picked mine up at Auto Zone. Yes Auto Zone. $54.00 plus $10.00 core, which I got back when I turned in the old one. The motor made a 200% difference. The window goes up and down faster than my brand new 2500HD. Now I am going to do the other window motor. :yesnod:
i think vette power is probably right, but if you ever have to fix the gear i did that on my 82 with the ss repair part . they give you directions, thought it was easier than changing the whole gear
Remove the inner door panel.
Retract the glass, remove the window rubber strip/chrome.
Remove the glass screws, carefully lift out the glass - it takes
a little bit of wiggling around, up/down, etc.
Mark the current screw locations and then unscrew them from the door.
Should slide out (but can't remember the top or bottom...)
Assemble (is as always) reverse the directions.
Be careful with the glass - it was sticky. Don't bust it
or let it fall when out side the car.
On removal, if it's the first time, the assembly is riveted to the door (three pretty large rivets). They have to be drilled out and replaced with bolts.
Paul,
This may sound a little stupid, but check your window motor mounting bracket. I just had one give up on me, allowing the motor to drop to the bottom of the door. But the symptoms sound a little like mine did before it dropped. Mine made a little clunking noise and didn't go up or down as smoothly as it use to. Yours may just be cracked a little allowing some "slop" in the movement. It took me a little while to even find this problem because I didn't research it first, so I didn't realize there was a bracket there. I've got a friend welding it back together for me now. Good luck and hope this helps some.
Check the motor bracket,if broken most suppliers sell them. Also check the motor gear and bushing as they can fail. And I agree it is eaiser to install the ss repair gear or the regulator as the gear is a pain.
