A couple weeks ago I drove my 74 up to Back to the Bricks in Flint, MI. The car did great, but on the way home I hear a horrible chirping sound which sounded like it was coming from behind the dash. After doing some homework, it appeared to be the speedo cable. So I decided to replace the cable. I was able to get my hand behind the speedometer, release the clip and then take it loose from the transmission, and then take it loose from it's routed path. I bought a new one from Paragon, and reinstalled it the same way, with no difficulty....now the damn thing is reading 5 mph to slow. did I do something wrong? I still have the original, should I reinstall that after a healthy grease? Help guys. I plan on taking her to autofest in Frankenmuth on Saturday, would love to have an accurate speedo on the way up.
Thanks,
Alex

Reason: spelling
he states nowhere that he changed the gear, he changed the cable! Be careful with greasing the cable, you do not want any getting into the speedometer head, I believe the correct lubricant is graphite based such as on this link.
all I did was change the cable, I figured that would be enough. None of what I read suggested changing the gear in the trans. So what do you guys mean exactly? Can someone provide a link to what I need to buy and how to install it? I better mention that there is something sticking out of the side tail of the trans, I think it's one of those 90 degree items that can be used for a tach and speedo.

Did you lube the cable with the graphite grease? You dont need anything else.
I assumed you replaced the gear as well...I have that issue with my 74 at the moment, and know I need to change the gear at the tranny, but first need to pull the old one out to see how many teeth it has so I can make the appropriate correction. It is one my (growing) list of things I want/need to do to my car.
Okay, now this is a good one. I still had the original cable, I pulled out the cable from the rubber hose part, cleaned it up, greased it with white lithium, reinstalled after removing the one from paragon, and its keeping pace with the speedometer app on my iPhone. The test run was held at 50mph and was damn near dead on. Was the grease that important or do they not make em like they used to???
The "new" cable was apparently binding a bit. And, I would guess that the manufacturer (or vendor) was saving some money by NOT lubing the cable. If your old cable is working well after the lube job, just keep it in the car.
But, I would do the same lube job on the "new" cable and keep it around for when the old one finally fails (could be 20 years...could be next week). There is likely nothing else wrong with it.
