The transmission in my 77 is leaking, it appears the fluid is coming out of the hole in the scatter shield at the bottom of the Bell housing. Could this be a leaking front seal. Any thoughts? Has anybody ever pulled a tranny with the car on jack stands?
I've pulled a manual tranny out with car on jack stands; don't think I'd want to try to remove an auto tranny like that. But, I'm sure it can be done.
Your leak...if it is ATF...is likely from the front seal. With significant age/wear on the car, the front bushing is likely worn. As that wears, the seat starts to get eroded, too. If you pull it to replace the seal, you might as well just get it rebuilt. If you are thinking about only doing the seal, you will soon be disappointed--as that wallowed-out bushing will cause very early seal failure.

Had to repair several leaks on my 77. Diagnosing the culprit can be hard and time consuming. Drop the scatter shield and use a flashlight to see if the torque converter are transmission housing has fluid on it. One of my leaks was the front of the transmission pan (the pan was warped) that would allow fluid to leak into the scatter shield. Also check the dipstick tube, detente cable, shifter seal.
That's exactly why I included the comment "if it is ATF" in my post. You need to know if the fluid is ATF or engine oil to determine where to focus your efforts.

I know it is transmission fluid is red and I have to top it up from time to time. I am going to check out the pan issue and make sure it isnt warped or something. The transmission seems to work fine, just getting tired of cleaning the garage floor.
That inspection cover is not meant to seal anything; it is there to keep dirt/rocks from getting to the front of the transmission or to the rear of the engine. In fact, the hole at the bottom is to allow any leakage to drain out.
if you have big enough jack stands ,it is not to hard of job to remove a tranny.if you have a good floor jack ,you can make your own tranny plate to cradle the trans for the R&R.
I am just finishing up fixing the shifter seal leak on my 77. It was leaking and running along the side of the transmission pan, across the front of the transmission pan, into the scatter shield/inspection pan and then dripping down.
It has been my experience that a leak can travel a long way before dripping, just to add fun to diagnosing the problem. My Vette usually requires two or more attempts to fix anything.
The test drive after the last set of repairs did bring a smile to my face, life is good when things come together.
