About a month ago my 78 developed a metal to metal sound, positive it's not the brakes.. It stoped making the sound until a few days ago and it is still doing it.. It sounds like it's from the passenger side rear of the car.. I was thinking that it might be a wheel bearing, a friend said possible a u joint.. Any one had this problem before?? Thanks for any help..
Well ..........I couldn't just leave your post out here to dry out......
Mostly everyone needs more info.
Like metal to metal squeak, knock, bang..........you know.
Heres a weird one that happened when we were in Monterey ca.
Had a front wheel bearing outer-- race-- Spin inside the hub, and make a squeak like a brake pad or bearing rollers.
Looked all good till the race just fell out when the guy was changing it for us.
I'll tell that story with a happy ending in the general sec...............

Drive next to a wall with your pass. window down. Listen to the squeak and see if it is a single squeak or a double one. Often a ball joint will squeak at the top and bottom of the u-joint rotation. Wheel bearing a squeak that will seem to match the rotation of the tire. Not scientific just something to try. Most likely a wheel bearing.

It's a single squeak, kind of sounds like when the wheel comes around to a certain area it sqeaks then if it is acually a wheel bearing..
Is it continuous or does it occur for each revolution of the tire? I have had a trim ring (on wheel) make that kind of squeek, but it was just each time the wheel rotated.
If it is a continuous squeal, drive the car at about 20 mph and do some quick back&forth twists of the steering wheel (small, quick movements) and listen for change in sound on that squeal/squeek. If it varies with your steering wheel movements, it is likely a front wheel bearing. If not, it could be something in the rear.

It is a continuous squeek, but get louder each time the wheel rotates...

I had the same thing, sound like the wheel bearing, took the hub off and found that the bolt was loose in the backing plate and was rubbing against the hub.
Parking brake springs and such can come apart after years of neglect and make some really weird noises... Pull the rotor on the noisy side.
Turns out to be a parking brake spring.. Sure did make a loud sqeak//// It's a automatic I have never used the parking brake..would it be ok to drive it like that, minus the noisy spring ?
