Default 74 rad help

Good day

so the story goes I have been rebuilding the front end and have the while in there thing going on.

so I am now down to putting in the new rad support had it all in and the rad will not drop down into the cradles.

So I went and pulled it all out again and pre-fit it. Seems as though the rad is a little wider at the tank rails then the cradle and rubbers. 1 side will sit on top of the rubber side instead of dropping into the center.

My old support has 1 side altered and has just a flat section instead of the original cradle so I can not get a measurement to see if the support is out or the rad is wrong.

Any one out there have a measurement across the rad tanks rails?

I am getting 28.5 in from outside to outside of the tank rails.
My cradle seems to be 28 1/4 ish from outside to outside.
Would need to be 27 3/4 center to center.

Just trying to figure out if I am modifying the cradle on the support or seeing if I can have the rad changed or I am looking for a rad???

Thanks

A quick update.

Looks like from everything I can find points to the support being correct and rad having a 1/4 to 1/2 inch too wide of a core in it.

No idea how that can happen as it looks correct in all other aspects and seems to be period correct.

Guess I am Rad hunting as I do not want to modify the support at this point.

That is my winter 2013/2014 project. What radiator did you buy? I have a small leak in mine and am hopeful I can just get it repaired economically, rather than buy a new one. The radiator support is expensive enough.

My 75, Champion 3 row. The fit was a drop in and it cools with no problem. It was about $200 shipped on ebay.

Default For what it is worth...

For what it is worth, I had to play with my radiator to radiator support fit too. I did the same, prefitted the radiator to the radiator support on my 72. I think my support was bent over a little and not square. Might be manufacturing tolerance and or shipping damage. I finally was able to bend it around a little and open up the U groove a little and got it to prefit good. If all else had failed, I would have cut the bracket and rewelded it.

Hope this might help.

Yep looked at all the options. Seems the rad in there measures wide at the core compared to everything I can find on line. Hated the idea of bending or moving a rad support cradle when the thing seems to measure correct and is brand new only to have isues if I need to replace in the future.

Called the rad shop and he will recore the right size but is 300 to 400.

Since I am changing to a 383 or so next year figure for the same cost I can get a 3 core or 4 core Champion in it.

I was going to do the electric fans as well while I am there but from some of the reports I can find the original fan and shroud seem to cool better.

Should be odering a new one this week.
