Hi, I'm trying o clean out the wiper bay and paint it before putting the wiper grill and wiper door back on. My ? Is : if I could remove the 2 end brackets temporarily, (there are 4 brackets in all- 2 on each end & 2 in the middle), i could easily clean out both ends of the wiper bay. But I'm worried because both ends of these two brackets connect to the thick metal rod that's connected to the wiper motor, and in the middle of this rod is a large spring. Does anyone know if I can safely remove these 2 end brackets without messing the reassembly and correct operation of the wipers again? I don't need to remove the long metal rod, if i dont have to, just the brackets so I can clean all the junk out of both ends of the wiper bay. Thanks! Joe from NH
Hi jh,
Most people remove the entire wiper door mechanism in one piece.
There's no need, or reason, to take the assembly itself apart to work on the wiper bay. The rivets that hold the assembly together and allow it to pivot need to be drilled out in order to take it apart. That's something you don't want to do.
The wiper door mechanism mounts onto the firewall with small nuts that fit on the 2 threaded studs on the brackets you've mentioned. Remove those nuts and the mechanism will lift out.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Yep. Remove it as a unit. Do not attempt to take it apart. Mark the shim stacks before you remove it.
