68/9 Rear Window Tray

68/9 Rear Window Tray
My friend is working on his 69 coupe. He was planning to install a rear window tray that he bought several years ago. He found that back side where the hinges are was too narrow for the existing bolt holes. This tray measured 37 ½” on the hinge side (back side) and 42 7/8” on the forward side. I am working on two 68s. Both have rear window trays and both measured 42 7/8” on the hinge and forward side.
Based on the parts books I have, the 68, 9 & 70 trays are the same (same part #), the 71 and 72 are different from each other (separate part #’s) and therefore different than the 68/9/0. We could not find part numbers on any of the 3 trays.
Finally, my questions: What did my friend buy, 71 or 72?? Also, the parts book indicates that the 68 hinges are unique; the hinges have separate part numbers for the R & L sides. Can he swap hinges and make one of my 68 trays work??

Hi Hugh,
There are several things to look at to begin to determine what tray your friend has.
The type of 'latch' in the trays front/center varied.
This is a mid-January 71 tray.... it used a spring catch mounted on the body.
Later trays had a 'push button' latch similar to the latch used on the 3 compartment doors.
What are you seeing?

Thank you Alan. My friends tray has the push button latch so it must be a 1972. I'm thinking he will be able to use my 68 if he changes the hinges. He should have it by next weekend so I'll know for sure then. Hugh
