Default Urgent Legislative Alert

New California Greenhouse Gas Emissions Bill Passes Legislature; Immediate Action Requested

In an underhanded maneuver, the California Legislature passed an alternative bill (A.B. 1493) to regulate "greenhouse gases," including carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions from motor vehicles. While the new bill prohibits regulators from reducing speed limits, restricting vehicle size or imposing new taxes or fees, it is little more than a
back-door effort by environmentalists to set fuel-economy standards - an authority exclusively reserved to the Federal Government. Because CO2 is given off whenever
gasoline is burned, the only way to cut emissions is to make vehicles that burn less gasoline or vehicles driven by electricity or other means. The new bill still represents bad
public policy. Accordingly, we need your help.

Please Contact Gov. Gray Davis Immediately Requesting That He Oppose The Bill

· A.B. 1493 amounts to an illegal state effort to regulate fuel economy, and contradicts Federal Government policy in opposition to dramatic increases to CAFE standards.

· A.B. 1493 will still result in the downsizing of cars and light trucks, limiting vehicle choice and increasing costs.

· A.B. 1493 could cause other states to follow California's misguided effort in setting unreasonable emissions rules on vehicles.

· A.B. 1493 could limit the sale and use of performance-related specialty automotive parts which enhance towing, hill-climbing ability, etc.

Call or e-mail the Governor's Office immediately to oppose A.B. 1493. Governor Davis can be reached at:

Phone: 916/445-2841
Fax: 916/445-4633
E-mail: governor@governor.ca.gov

Thanks again for your prompt attention to this matter.

I am guessing your remarks about Mexico were not real serious.
Having been there numerous times and locales, and speaking Spanish fairly well, I can tell you that the total freedom is for a select few with money and power.
For years I organized a group to build houses for people who have none.
Families of 7 in 12' x 16', dirt floor, one light bulb.
Having been arrested there and seeing a friend arrested, the "Golden Rule" applies...if you have the gold, you make the rules. A U.S. guy in the cell with me had a really nice Dodge Charger...local cop wanted it, so they took it and planted dope on him...adios.
But I think I see your point. In Cal you need a permit to sneeze. :seeya

No offence, but America (presumably you mean the USA) isn't the same as it was 50 years ago either.

Our lifestyle has never been so good but if we don't start showing better environmental stewardship we'll totally screw it up for our children and their children's children. I don't like it either when States have to go around the Feds on issues like this, but our elected Representatives have shown so little responsibility on the issue of oil consumption and energy usage in general, that I'm glad someone is willing to take it on.

I'm so sick of this "if we don't do something now, it'll all be over with for our children" cr@p that I could just about :U . Now I'm not against measures to keep the air and water clean, but they have to be within reason. The whole movement started out with good intentions, but like everything else, liberal tree hugger ***** have decided to make it an obsession and are no longer concerned with the environment. Now it is about forcing their beliefs on the rest of the world, and more over, leveling the playing field so that we are all forced to live exactly the same. (can you say COMMUNISM????!!!) We are currently at, or a bit beyond, the point that needed to be reached with automotive polution standards. If you want to get 30 MPG, there are cars out there that do it. If you want a great big sport ute, they are out there too. That is freedom of choice. If you want to spend the cash on a larger car and more gas, it's up to you. The smog testing has gone to extremes already, and they want to go farther. We have our act cleaned up and they think we need to go farther or we'll "ruin it for our children and our childrens children". Look at all of the countries that have been polluting for hundreds of years more than us, and haven't cleaned it up, and they seem to be surviving just fine. Maybe we aren't as great as some of us think and the earth is stronger.

There's my enviro-speal for today. :) I guess we all know where I stand on this one. :D

“Wait a minute Governor, Do I not give off CO2 when I breath? And where do you think electricity comes from?”

Seriously, Governor Davis indicated last night that he is "inclined" to sign the bill. That is an indication that he is waiting for the letters and emails to come in. So send him a note today.

This is not a California issue. We buy a lot of cars out here and well help set the pace for the rest of the nation, so you guys in Texas better write in to.

George in California.

(Flame resistant suit on now...) Just playing the devils advocate here, but didn't we go through this already and end up better off? I remember the c**p the big three were pawning off on us in the seventies (granted somewhat driven by smog laws), but when a Z06 gets 20 plus miles per gallon and my POS Suburban gets 12 on a REALLY good day and can't get out of it's own way, I'm OK with a little force feeding. Manufacturers wont apply decent technology because they can sell low tech all day long. Besides, I'm getting tired of days when I can "see" the air. OK, fire at will...

I cannot help but wonder if this whole thing wasn't started by some tree hugger with SUV envy. of course I cannot STAND SUVs. well over half are owned by single people who really don't need em, cant drive em and blingbling em to death. oh well better they do it to a truck than a Vette

I don't see Will around but you make a handy target Hans,

I'll start with:
Besides, I'm getting tired of days when I can "see" the air
At least you are not saying we need cleaner air "for the children.." The air in Los Angeles (used to be smog capitol), is so much cleaner and clearer now than it was when I was growing up that I do not go with this agruement... People claim there are so many more breathing problems now and blame smog when the smog was worse years ago when there were less problems. The air is so much better now it is time they went after something other than cars.

my POS Suburban gets 12 on a REALLY good day and can't get out of it's own way
If you are concerned with CO2, why do YOU drive your 12 mpg 'burb? You can haul as many people and as much volume (but not weight) in a mini-van. If you want to bitch, set a good example. Some people NEED a large SUV but most simply WANT. Why should those the need suffer for the wanters?

They have already applied much modern technology to the large SUV's. If they want more milage, ease the emission controls a bit.

Now for the fun part.... Most of the Dem's who voted for this measure drive SUV's or large cars (Cad's and Linc's), the very things this bill is trying to do away with (low MPG vechiles) that are paid for with our tax dollars (a $500 a month auto allowance). With this money, they could all be driving ultra high MPG, low emission autos. They could almost have two, one for use at the capitol, and one for the home office. They could then car pool with three others and set a good example. Instead I exspect the next law for them to consider will be adding a center lane for thier "elite" class use only like the old U.S.S.R. used to have in Moscow. Instead of giving a $500 per month car allowance, I feel the state should look into buying a fleet of black Volga limos from Russia.

The air in LA. may be better, but its still got along way to go. I'd come in from Brastow at sunrise and see that stuff creeping up out of the vally its bad, and some days I go in there and my eyes start burning.

Dont get me wrong California is a buetiful state and I miss being out there every other week but you do have some screwed up laws.
I think the US inhibits its manufactures more than any other country with emitions and polution laws most are for our benefit but some are cost restrictive and beond what most are willing to pay.
Look at the trucking companies they are buying up older trucks to put off buying the new diesel engines that meet the 2003 required emitions standerds.
1. Because they increase the new truck price by $5 to 7k.
2. The engine temps are increased by reburng exaust and decreasing fuel milage." does this make any sence" Its a quickfix to meet standerds.
3.Trucking companys do not trusts the reliability of this tecnoligy. All they see is higher maintenance,a bigger fuel bill.

Liberalism in a mental disorder not political views. When a madman kills a few people what happens? Here in calif we send them to jail for 3 years, In Texas they use capital punishment.

If you do really know anything about our environment then you are aware that the Moon is moving away from the Earth at a rate of 1.5 inches
per year and that one day the Earth will not have the Moon's gravity
to keep us on our Axis and will spin irrattically...thus the Earth will
no longer be able to have a North/South Pole and there will be no
seasons, just very damn hot or ice cold. The Earth will no longer be
able to support life. This will happen before auto's emissions kill
us...if nuclear war doesn't first.

I become very hostile when faced with communist/tree hugger that tries to take away my freedom and my money.....
Just as political statement when I finally find the right Vette I am going mod the hell out of it, have it emission tested, and send the little result paper to the Clinton's and to the communists that run California. Write on the back "I am an American polluting America. Move to China!"

I agree with most of what you say Gerry. Lucky for me I only live a short walk from work, so I don't drive the 'burb except for hauling a 3200 pound boat and my 3 teenage sons (they got BIG in a hurry!). Plus the wife is into dogs, so I need something. I actually miss the Dodge van I had. It was way better and had a 440 that could make 16 mpg.

Talking about new tech, the mechanical engineering department has a 01 'burb that uses a Saturn 2.0/Electric that gets 26-32! That's where I want go. Glad to hear about LA getting better; up here it's definitely getting worse.

I've never had to use this one before: :bs
The world had been spinning for billions of years. It will continute to do so for billions more. We'll probably run out of gasoline long before emissions kill us, and a long long long (think "so long no one will be around to see it") time before the earth simply stops spinning or the sun dies.

While I'm certainly against making emission laws more strict, that's a really bad (and factually unfounded) argument.
