Just wanted to see what everyone is using for spark plugs. My motor is a 467 with Merlin heads. I was thinking about going to a platinum tip style, are they worth it? I have the original style distributor with Pertronix guts and coil. Thanks for the input!
i was told not to use plat. plugs in my BB 454 the guy at the speed shop said some thing like they get to hot he said there good for small motors. i've allways had good luck with ac delco. i've tried ngk's,accell, autolight, and champion but like ac the best. jim
I personally run NGK's. But a good judge of a good plug is to see what the nitrous and supercharger manufacturer's recommend, since they put a spark plug under a lot of abuse in those situations. Never seen them recommend a platinum plug. I ran NGK's on my ranger when I was running nitrous on it (they were recommended) and they did great, never had a spark plug problem, except I tended to wear them out fairly quickly but that was to be expected under the conditions. I was impressed enough with them that I switched the big block over to them shortly after purchase.
I run mine at 44, but that's with a healthy ignition system backing it and a fairly low compression engine 8.25:1 (that's if nothing was changed prior to my purchase since the heads were off of it at one time and may have been shaved). Normally the higher the compression the less gap you want to run, since it takes more spark energy to jump a gap under those conditions, If your running 9.5-10:1 then I'd say 38-40 would be safe, with an ignition box you could go up to 42-44 and be safe.
I run Accel # 276 normal heat range and #274 if you want one step colder. If you have a header problem I run #276 S for short. They are about 3/8 th of and inch shorter ceramic for increased clearance.
I run these same plugs with nitrous or blown and get years out of a set.
