Default The Infamous Differential Code Question

why cant i find my differentials codes on any GM site, or eaton or any other for that matter. there is a 'GM' stamped right into the casting (actually protruding from casting). and during most searches i am referred to a gasket face identification chart, what the #$@%, I've got the numbers right here, lets use em! as you may have seen yourself none of these gasket face identifiers include an 8 bolt IRS style diff. the lowest bolt count i find is 10, makes me want to drink! furthermore the guy who stamped my diff. on the bottom was obviously hung-over and let the stamp bounce on the first letter which is an 'A' so there are 2 'A's overlapping eachother... im not sure if there is supposed to be 2 or 1???!!! whew! i feel better already, so there is a 'GM' with a '13' above it, also a 'G64' and 'C2' as well as the hand stamped 'AWW198E2' and as i said the 'A's are on one another so it may be 'AAWW198E2' but i doubt it. P.S. i know it is a 3.08, thanks to any helpers!

I believe, from looking at several sources, that your code is broken down as follows:

AW - 3.08:1
W - Warren Michigan Plant
198 - Julian date of manufacture
E - Eaton posi-traction
2 - Shift that assembled the unit

Assuming it's a 74 from your screen name, I believe the differential cover is 8 bolt, ecklers has the gaskets http://www.ecklerscorvette.com/1974-...sket-rear.html

Hope that helps and/or is what your looking for.

Thanks, where did you get that info, i found no codes that started with an 'A' . I was initially looking for information about torque ratings and overall reputation of the rear end i.e. bearing problems, seals leaking,... just wanted to know if its worth a dang before i spend any money on it! im looking to get a 3.73 gear set and will be replacing the bearings and seals when i do that. there is a pletera of info on the 10 and 12 bolt patterns but it just frustrated me to find virtually nothing on my 8 bolt IR. and f.y.i. i would be buying the parts from Ecklers. unless anyone has a Cheper place to get the parts. You could peice together an entire Vette from Ecklers, but boy are they pricy!

Better question is where are you looking as all but one of the codes from 71-75 start with "A". Found in almost all Corvette spec guides and on many web sites.

10 or 12 bolt only denotes the number of bolts on the ring gear, has nothing to do with the rear cover.

This info is correct! If you would like to order any new parts, shoot me a pm and I will see what we can do with the price and shipping!

Thank you very much,
