Default Steering hub / shaft bolt

Ok folks, I had to replace my lower horn contact on my '69. Now I need to replace the steering wheel and hub which I took off as a unit. Now, I'm tightening down the steering nut to pull on the hub. How far down does the nut need to go? I.e. how much should the shaft stick up from the nut? I didn't take a picture to remember by, but my telescope locking collar doesn't seem to go far down enough.

Asked another way, how far up the hub should the steering come? If I take the nut back off, the shaft and the hub are not flush.

Here's a picture of where I'm at now:

MakoJoe, yes it helps but let me rephrase my question. In my picture we see the threaded end of my steering shaft and the steering shaft nut.

As I torque the nut, the steering hub is pressed onto the steering shaft. How far down do I press the hub onto the shaft?

I'm afraid of stripping the shaft or something else equally dreadful.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Did a little more research on this use a Torque Wrench and Tighten down the nut to 30 Ft pounds of Torque after centering it.

Here is the link I found. Many times you can put into Google Search engine and find what your looking for after sifting through the pages it turns up. I used the phrase "installing steering wheel 1969 corvette"

Chevrolet Chassis Service Manual says 30 ft-lbs.
So do the various AIM sheets 25-35 lbs ft, (various UPC codes; UPC 9B Sheet 1, 12G Sheet 2, N37 A1. etc.)

Ok, 25-35 lbs. Will do. I think I was overthinking this. Thanks for the help MakoJoe and Jim Shea. I yes I did google it, and yes I do have all your papers Jim and the AIM and the CSM. I just need to do a better job of searching--maybe I'll get the electronic versions. Thanks again. And Jim I can't thank you enough for the FAQ's you published about steering!!!!
