Ok so here it is. Mechanic told me my carb was bad. Car ran really bad. My other car is now totaled 3000k to fix a junker, no way. Need this running by Monday for work. Out of cash gotta do this myself (oh $$^&&^%%). So get rebuilt carb. install it (I am a novice, took pictures to install everything right). Start up cold car. Engine running at 2500 rpm. I locate the fast idle screw under the choke. Back it off. No change what so ever. Still at 2500. Figured I spayed carb cleaner inside intake w carb off so burn off time is needed. Waited for 10 minutes while car ran at 2500. Turned off car. Turned in mixture screws. All the way in to lean it out. Car still runs at 2500 rpm. Even with the screws all the way in! Car warmed up. Quickly I might add. car still did not back off from 2500 rpm. What on earth is wrong besides me having to play mechanic. I remember installing a rebuilt carb on a 67 mustang 20 years ago. Had a book telling me what steps to set what screws at. It was a piece of cake and ran like a champ due to the book. I am at a loss here. Tomorrow I am going to start with a cold engine. Where do I start to fix this? And explain as if I were 10 years old. Thanks!
Check linkages start looking at the simple stuff first.
Had to go out front so I figured I would look over the linkage now. Looks correct. Just not sure how the choke plate is supposed to look cold in the morning. It is all the way open. Is that correct or is it supposed to be closed when cold?
with a cold engine that is not running, the choke butterfly should close completely when you work the linkage. when the engine starts, the pull-off will open the butterfly about 1/4 inch. did you adjust the fast (choke controlled) idle, or the hot idle screw? it sounds like the choke is improperly set and the engine is running on the fast idle. do a search (or down load lars' excellent carb papers) on setting the choke.
If the engine is still running after screwing the idle mixture screws all the way in, it's not running on the idle circuit. You probably just need to turn down the idle speed screw to close up the primary throttle blades, so it will run on the idle circuit. Also, the throttle linkage could be the problem, not letting the throttle blades close all the way. Could be a lot of things, it's hard to say without more info. And, ironically, if you knew the info we need, you probably wouldn't need our help. It's kinda like you're saying "I have a red car, and it's making a weird noise. What's wrong with it?" So, we have to start at the beginning. What kind of carb is it?
