This just started happening and has me a little freaked out.
I pulled the car out of the garage today to do some interior work and as soon as I put the car in park, this awful grinding sound started. I quickly turned off the car.
After doing the work, I started it up and all was fine, I put the car back in the garage and as soon as I put it in park the sound was back.
It almost sounds like the started re-engaged on a running engine.
Anyone had this before?
while it could be the starter its more likely a transmission issue with it not going all the way into park and not going all the way out of drive. next time you stop , put it into nuetral and see if it still does it. It may require you taking the shift cable free from the transmission shifter lever at the transmission , moving that all the way foward till it stops and then adjusting the cable foward to match up, and reinstalling it. hope this helps
But this is for starting problems. do you think this fixes my problem also? The seat belt receivers are not connected and may not be since I purchased the replacement set from Corvette Mods.
The interlock system is more involved than just the seat belt interupters. It also has an over ride built into it to start the car. This is what is messing up. Best thing to do is get a wiring diagrahm and bypass the whole system.
Mike
You do not have to cut and solder the relay. To bypass just jumper together the 12 light green/black to 12 purple.
Your problem could be in the:
Neutral safety switch
Ignition switch
Seat belt interlock relay
Funny you should say "Ignition Switch", I was just saying yesterday that my switch is getting stiff to turn, especially into accessory mode (back wards).
Not sure where the Neutral safety switch is just yet.

Pete, how did you jumper your relay? Can you jumper it from the outside?
I just tried to remove the relay and it is bolted through the hosing, problem is the nuts are moving so now what happens to the nut when I get the bolt out, does it fall into my circulating fan?
I tried to see the colors of the wires, but they all look black from the top looking down.

The relay is the silver box, just pull it towards the front of the car.
That will help you get to the wires.
Then connect the 12 light green/black to 12 purple.
The override relay is shown on the lower left in the diagram above.

Let's start over.
The relay is missing already so lets guess that it has been bypassed. That can be verified by testing the 4 holes but that test is 2 pages long so lets look elsewhere for now.
The ignition switch (not the key switch) is held to the steering column with 2 screws.
If it got loose it may be an easy fix so lets check there first. It's on the upper side and at the lower end.
Then lets look for a bad adjustment at the NSS.
The switch can be out of adjustment or shorted out or a wire could be pinched.

Here's an index for the AIM. Thanks to Mr. Birkes for publishing it. My AIM is from a different vendor so the page number is off by a few pages. Ex:Steering column is listed as p350 but is on 347. Still brings me close enough. http://www.birkes.com/corvette/sprea...Alpha_Sort.htm
Mr. Jim Shea is the expert on steering columns and his papers are here: http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/
Look under Corvette steering.
The switch is here:
Hope you are young and flexible or have a good Chiropractor.
Ah no, 50 and getting more un-flexible by the day.
Can't I just bypass the relay connector like VetteFixr did?
This is probably related to the fact that I no longer have the original Seat Belt receivers installed and therefor the wire that used to come from them to the circuit is not connected.
