They go in from the front. The caps have little hooked "fingers" that clip into the groove in the rim center.
You may wish to add a little black rtv to the "fingers", helps them stay put once installed and prevents rattles etc. that seem to plague the replacement caps.

The reason that I asked was because I tried about 10 years ago pressing the caps from the front and I did break a couple of the teeth and lost two of the caps soon after i installed them and now I bought some new caps and just wanted to make sure I was doing it right, thanks for the idea of the black rtv
The RTV will also act as a little lubricant when installing them and that helps.
You can also take a file or emery paper and smooth the edge of the rim slightly with the cap goes in to help the fingers start.
