Default Intake manifold gasket problem. (UPDATE)

The good news is my bottom end is fine, bad news is my car is drinking a quart of oil every 50 miles through the intake. Weiand Stealth and World Sportsman heads, using Fel-pro printo seal. Anyone have an horror stories or useful tips ? Last time I had the intake off I noticed some very mild consuption, is there a problem with this combination that I am not seeing ?

Below is a shot of the breached gasket. that little crack allowed a gallon of oil to flow into a single cylinder in 250 miles.

What's the part # of the gaskets? I just ordered the Fel-Pro #2802 gasket set from Summit and it comes with #1256 gaskets. These are the gaskets Edelbrock also recommends for their intake.

That's the combo I have on my sb and I could not get a good seal with the metal impregneted stamped gaskets at all. I finally used the Mr.Gasket set. I put a very thin layer of RTV on both sides, let it dry for about 5 minutes and bolted it down. I used the RTV instead of the rubber seals front and back and sealed the bottom 3 threads on all intake bolts. Torqued 4 or 5 times getting up to the max torque the last two. Let it sit overnight to completly set the RTV. No leaks or consumption anymore, but it was a pain to get it sealed. Hope this helps.

I've been having some sealing problems with my intake. I have fixed these by running a very small bead of Ultra Black RTV on both the head side and the manifold side of the gaskets. This has completely eliminated my gasket seal problem.

Some will probably tell you not to use RTV as it says it is not for areas in contact with gas (such as head gaskets). It is said to be acceptable in the Fel-Pro installation instructions and I was told by a Permetex tech support person that it would be ok. I did pull my manifold after about 650 miles and verified it was not leaking and that the RTV was not affected by any gas.

Help me out, here ...it's late and I've had a couple, but isn't a quart every 50 miles become a gallon in 200 miles...?? Anyway, we do have a problem here.

I've never had a problem with intake gaskets. I don't dick with the to cheep end gaskets. I just run a nice FAT beed of RTV and go from there. Never had a leek and I've had the intake off way too many times...

Yes she has an oil consuption problems I have put a Gallon of oil in it in one day. The car is burning oil out the right exhaust header, its cylinder #4.

I checked the carnkcase and it is producing a vacuum so I know the intake is breached.

Thanks to all who responded.

If you have a 5 degree difference between the manifold and head in terms of angle with say a 2.75 tall flange that would create a .025 gap,,tough for any gasket to seal

Felpro now sells part # 2520 to help measure both the heads and the manifold before assembly on a "V" design motor

I have been seeing more and more of these type posts lateley ,,this suggests to me there is some "twist" in the assemblies

I hope you get it fixed w/o too much more trouble and time

I think the problem is probably none of the above, but in fact some machine shop somewhere, has.....
deck the block incorrectly...the two banks are not exactly 90* from each other...
OR...and more likely....a lot of machine shops do what's known as 'angle milling' or cutting more off the intake edge of the head surface than the exhaust edge, this aids in keeping the plugs high enough, and reduced the combustion chamber size looking for compression.....knock 50 mills more off the intake edge then the exhaust edge and you would get damn near 20 mills differance in the V of the heads on the intake mateing surface.....
I faced the problem, couldn't figger it, and had my intake resurfaced, had 20 mills cut off the TOP of the intake passages, changing the angle....closing it up a bit....so the bottom was then 'fatter' then the top, and on those heads it sealed like a bandit.....
since then I have changed heads to Edelbrock aluminum, instead of the milled stock iron heads.....and I think due to the top location of the bolts, and clamping forces generated, I pulled the intake sealed tight as a casting now...
no induction oil suction.....
I bet you pull that intake and find a TON of oil slime on the intake floor down toward the intake valves.....plural....and virtually none upstream.....

that's what I saw, even though some plugs were worse than others....

Good idea, I've had sealing problems also. You could easily use a carpenders angle guage to check the intake vs. the cylinder head angle. Don't know why I never thought of it before

Yellow, I have a lot of angle finders, and carpenter's tools...but they never found much differance....and did't seem suited to the job very well, I finally just gave up and starte trying with feeler gauges, still couldn't substantiate what I felt was the problem.....too boot the gaskets SEEMED to be clamped enough on the bottom edge, BUT they were soaked with oil 1/2 way up the gasket surface...on both sides....
finally I just bit the bullett and had the intake cut....
and that proved my observations, screw the measurements that were probably indadequate for the job at hand.....

use a wire feeler gauge to check the gap(size and taper) at the front and rear of the block.

do you have the old gaskets? check them too!

i assume it has been re-torqued numerous times.

I was already in the motor once this year to do the cam. I would have this mysterious condition where on a low throttle cruise she would build up with something and when I get on it you would see this cloud of crap clean out. So that tells me that the problem is not related to torquem its defintily a shortcoming in the gasket as its been sourcing oil from there for a while. I will dig into it this weekend and see what is up.

if you use sealer on the bolts, they will resist re-tightening, and must be yanked on real hard to re tighten.

good luck
would only take a bit of dirt to cause a problem; i hope it is simple :seeya

The lastest intake gaskets on my motor are mr gasket 1/8" thick jobs from the Summit cat. MRG-106 I think, with Form-a-gasket "300" on both sides...so far so good

Per Edelbrock,,,,when installing a RPM manifiold dont use the rear gasket piece and use a bead of RTV in its place. Toyota Black RTV is the best I have ever used. Bullet Proof and sticks like no tommorow. Best of all nobody will know its a toyota product.

I'm not sure which gasket your heads need, but it must be FelPro 1204 or 1205. I use spray on red gasket adhesive on the head side and wd-40 on the intake side so I can remove the intake without needing a new gasket.

That is way to much oil. I hope you figure it out.
